Here is three images depicting the interior of San Salvatore in Campo. They are meant to provide a closer look at some of the works of art described in the previous page. The first one (above) shows the upper part of the main altar. Above the painting of the Transfiguration (not shown in this image) we can see the Dove of the Holy Spirit surrounded by rays of golden light and cherubs. Above this motive two putti is holding the Cross. We may also discern some of the now deteriorated frescoes of the apse.

As we look up into the vault of the apse, we may see, in the centre, the Christogram surrounded by rays of golden light. It is flanked by angels holding the nails of the Cross (left) and the Inscription plate (right).

The lower walls of the apse display panels with frescoes. One of these frescoes (severely decayed) has a putto holding the Veronica, i.e. the veil of Veronica with the true image of Jesus Christ. It is enclosed by a golden flower-festoon. As Jesus Christ was struggling His way to Golgotha, a pious woman named Veronica came up to Him and wiped His face with a piece of cloth. The image of the Saviour's face then appeared on the cloth.
